) Even in recent years, I've sometimes ended up making two cakes. So in preparation for this year's round, I have come up with a list of options I plan to offer Tessa and Josiah:
- A cake (note the use of the singular). An excursion somewhere special with a guest or two.
- A cake. A special dinner at home with a guest or two.
- A cake. Dinner out with a guest or two.
- A cake. Afternoon tea and activities at home with a group of friends.
- A cake. Afternoon tea and a visit to a playground or similar with a group of friends.
I would like to place a further stipulation that the last two options, which potentially involve me supervising and entertaining a large group of children, are only on offer to each child every second year - one year to Josiah and the next year to Tessa - so that I don't have to do two big parties within a few weeks of each other.
Maybe occasionally there could be an added option: to choose one of the expensive package parties offered by every kids' venue in town.
I wonder if I am being ungenerous limiting the options this way. I like birthday celebrations to be special and fun, but too much complexity and expense makes it seem like a day of excess to me.

I know how you feel my 3 children all have their birthdays 6 weeks apart and been a single parent on a tight budget I need to spread thing out so we have small birthdays and only special birthdays we have larger parties and always only ONE cake now, when I was married we had a cake for everything, one for Nana's visit, school, friends, Grandpas visit the list was endless and tiring, now we have happy well remembered birthdays.
Love your blog,

Birthday's are crazy at my house, too. No matter how hard I try to simplify, it just doesn't seem to happen. We usually do two birthday's per child also.
It's encouraging to hear I'm not the only one who thinks simpler could be better with regard to birthdays!
We've made the arrangements for Tessa's party now and it's looking straightforward though I get a bit nervous when I hear Tessa wondering aloud what she'd like to do on her actual birthday - the party is the weekend after.
Josiah wants to go climbing outdoors for his birthday, which we can do fairly easily :)
my little sister has just turned 5 2 weeks ago and we had a party at a trampolene centre then had all her friends back to the house, never again!
"Never again." LOL, I know the feeling!
We had Tessa's party yesterday. We booked a party package at our local climbing wall, HangDog. Tessa has often seen parties there and wished for one for herself. The kids all had a fantastic time; I was exhausted by the end.
It was a mad rush getting there because I set my watch wrong in the morning. My plan was to have everything ready in time to start loading the car at 1:20pm. In the morning, I baked the cake and did some of the food the preparation then went to have a rest (I have a cold). Tessa came to find me to ask if we should ice the cake. I said there was plenty of time, that it was only 12:10. "The computer clock says it's 1:10pm," Tessa responded!
We still had to gather our climbing gear, ice the cake, cut the pineapple and vegie sticks, pack the food from the fridge and cook pop corn.
It turned out alright. One of our guests reached HangDog before we did but we made it before the rest got there.
